$60 Million stolen from Ethiopian Orthodox church account
Patriarch Abune Paulos

$60 Million stolen from Ethiopian Orthodox church account

A member of the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church revealed that at least 60 Million birr is missing from the church’s account. The member, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, told local journalists this financial issue is one of the sources of recent dispute inside the church leadership.

Since the current Patriarch Abune Paulos replaced Patriarch Abune Merkorios, there have been several allegations and accusations over unaccounted for assets during the last several years. The new Patriarch Abune Paulos has been credited for restoring most of the church’s property seized by the former government of Mengistu Haile Mariam. However, millions more dollars worth in property and other church assets have been lost during and since the transition period, according to the source.

These concerns have allegedly added fuel to the clashes between the Patriarch's group and some archbishops, including the suspended Abune Samuel. While the situation has calmed over the last few days, many expect the dispute to restart when the Holy Synod assembles after two months, unless the underlying problems are addressed.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) claims to have a membership of 45 Million Ethiopians but the last official Census put its membership at 32.1 Million or 43.5% of the total population of Ethiopia. Despite losing nearly fifteen percent of its overall members to the rapidly growing Ethiopian Evangelical churches, which have grown to 18.6 percent of the country, Orthodox is still the largest religious denomination in Ethiopia.

EOTC has seen declining membership among various ethnic groups, particularly in the southern states including Oromia. An estimated 30.5 percent of Oromos are members of the Ethiopian Orthodox church. Language barriers, politics and the growing evangelical Christianity are said to be main causes for its decline among the Oromo community.

The so called holiy man
A gorilla fighter and killer, like his country man Melses, of course, what better position does these people have to steal. It is like the fox keeping an eye on the sheep. One only has to see how magnificently dressed he is putting all the gold chain and the crown. If one did not know he is a priest, one will tend to see him a ghetto rapper decked out with his ghetto regalia

Look at his attire and fancy pair of shoe he wears. Never in history of Ethiopia, a so called pope spend so much money to look the way he looks. Beside, like Legese's generals, he is also a tigre. Don't be surprise what is taking place.

What is the big deal, when you have the fox watching the chicken coup. Beside, these so called pope was a former gun tooting gorilla fighter, undoubtedly have killed people

Give thanks
I am not a native ethiopian, but I am a member of the EOTC. Abune Paulos will have have to answer to God, if he did do it. Believe it or not, what the Abune does with the money is really none of our business. That(what he did with the $money) is between the Abune and God. The Holy Synod will deal withthe situation appropriately as trusted guardians of the church. *Remember-when it comes to the money one gives to the church, "..do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing."

Once you give to the church, you are giving it to God despite what a church offical does with it.

Let God be the avenger.

language barrier
Once it was said there is no Oromo priest. After searching, however, about 7 low ranking Tullama Oromo priests found but not with Oromo name. The point here is Oromo can't be full member of Ethiopian Orthodox due to the assertion that g*lla have no "kiba kidus"; and that galla would not and can not lear/undertand the phylosophical litergical language of the church-geez."

Then, why force "Gallas" by all means possible to be amharas and speak nothing but amharic which they may "not be able to learn by nature?"
