Ethiopia: election related clashes reported in Addis Ababa University
AAU
Local media outlets reported election related violence in the Addis Ababa University (AAU) campus this past week. The clashes were between supporters of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and the main opposition party, Ethiopian Federal Democratic Unity Forum (Forum) also known as "MEDREK."

According to the reports, EPRDF supporters were threatening Medrek supporters in the school. Federal police entered the campus to stop the fighting. In the past, the university police has been known for ignoring pro-govt instigated disturbances while cracking down harshly on pro-opposition rallies and opposition supporters.

Many were injured as the result of the recent fighting. In a related development, Oromo liberation media reported harassment of opposition supporters in Western Shewa zone of Oromia, which is the support base of the Oromo People's Congress (OPC) sub-party of the Medrek coalition.

The next Ethiopian election is scheduled for May 23 of this year. The opposition expects to win if the election board becomes independent. However, the impartiality of the board has worsened compared to the 2005 election board. In 2005, the board was forced to accept overwhelming opposition victories in the urban areas and Ethiopian cities, including opposition wins in Adama, Assosa, Jimma, Awassa, Nekemte, Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Debre Markos, Weliso, Debre Berhan, Gondar City, , Kombolcha, Shashemene and Ambo. The election board declared victory for the ruling party in many parts of the rural where the presense of international observers was minimal.

If we really want to see a real change in Ethiopia, we must stop worshipping individuals and instead start building institutions. I am now more optimistic than ever before because more and more of people are coming forward and telling the truth like it is. Beginning to identify and admit the main reasons for our hitherto failures is the first big step in the right direction in solving our problems. Empty bravado without building the institutional capacity to back it up has never gotten us anywhere except bringing us repeated failure and humiliation. Adulating individuals more than institutions, waiting for miraculous wind to land among us an authoritarian messiah (qorat meri) instead of building institutions that help leaders emerge is nothing but a symptom of insanity. I do not want to embroil myself into the argument of chicken or egg comes first, but for me it is institutions that deliver good leaders and not vice versa. Strong institutions come first before strong leaders. Strong institutions are the essential precursors for the emergence of strong leaders. Strong institutions serve as the platform for the emergence of strong leaders. Strong institutions not only help create strong leaders but strong institutions keep strong leaders in check from abusing or misusing their power as well. The question then is who builds strong institutions. The answer is very simple. It is the people, us. How? By upholding the time honored fundamental principle: No one is above the institution (the law). If we are unequivocal in making our fundamental principle and values sacrosanct, no one dares to violate the laws of the institution. No genius, if the laws of an institution are fully respected by everyone, the institution becomes strong. We will not and cannot have a strong institution if we always keep starting up building an institution from the scratch, then abandon it for this or that reason and keep going back to square one. We will always be found floundering in square one even decades and centuries down the line instead of striding forward. No institution is born perfect. Any perfection requires time and investing lots of efforts in it. Newly created institutions are like new born babies. No sane mind expects a new born baby to be able to do everything, much less a miracle, as soon as it comes out of the womb. It takes a village, time and lots of efforts to bring up a child and make him/her a strong citizen. The same thing is true for any institution. We really have to give it time and invest in it to make an institution a strong institution. I believe and hope that more and more people are slowly but surely coming to this understanding. That is a key for our future efforts to bring about change in Ethiopia - a change whereby all the rights of all its citizens are respected fully without any if's and but's. Finally, I am not talking about strong dictators here. I am talking about strong leaders. Leaders are totally different from dictators. Dictators never create institutions, instead they destroy institutions. Dictators create a network of mafia terrorist groups/militia that terrorize the people. Dictators claim to be leaders without being elected by the people they claim to lead. Meles is a strong dictator but he is not a leader. Meles has never been elected by the Ethiopian people. He came to power and stays in power by terrorizing and killing the Ethiopian people through the network of militia he created.

Ethiopian Analysis
I am suspicious of many posts here, most of them are non-amharic speaking posts! It seems the egyptians are here pretending to be Ethiopians to incite us to kill each other.

Another thing, if the opposition "Medrek" is so violent now, imagine how they will be if they take power: Derg military regime reborn
