UK Minister: Ethiopian Govt should investigate food aid politicization

British Minister for Trade and Investment Gareth Thomas

(Reuters) - Ethiopia should investigate allegations that local officials are keeping food aid from opposition members to force them to join the ruling party ahead of national elections, a British aid minister said on Tuesday.

An opposition coalition last week said its members were being refused places on a long-running food-for-work scheme for more than 7 million hungry people to force them to join the governing party before the elections in May next year.

"I have heard allegations from the international community about distribution of food aid and the (food-for-work) programme and I have already raised those accusations with the deputy prime minister," Gareth Thomas, Britain's state minister for development, told a news conference in Addis Ababa.

"These allegations should be investigated thoroughly. The government said if evidence is produced that they would investigate and that was encouraging."

Thomas said Britain had made no decision to suspend aid to Ethiopia -- one of the world's poorest countries -- but that it could take "tough decisions" if necessary.

Britain donated 71 million pounds ($119 million) to the food-for-work scheme this year, making it the second largest donor after the World Bank.

The Ethiopian government says 6.2 million people will need emergency food aid this year and has appealed to the international community for help. With 7 million also on the food-for-work scheme, that means that more than 13 million of Ethiopia's 80 million people rely on aid to survive.

You westerners!!!!! You talk much, but practically you are always by the side of blood-suckers(dictators). Most of the money that comes to Ethiopia is always politicized!! TPLF cadres know that nobody will vote for them unless they frighten people. Therefore, they use all means to subjugate the people. That is why they forced us to fill EPRDF party membership form by force. Don't be mistaken! They don't say "Unless you fill this form, you will not get this and that...". They simply bark at you while distributing the form and keep quite. Unfortunately, starting from that time onwards, they start to look up on you as an enemy. You will also be devoid of your citizenship rights such as access to sponsorship for further education, competition for a post( you may compete of course, but a person less competent than you will get the post-if you dare to ask the reason, you will be shown the fake competition results or you will be treated inhumanly),etc[uncountable!!!]. Please, Please!!!!!!!! STOP HELPING DICTATORS. We can bring a change for ourselves. Leave African dictators alone! Don't give them money that can be stolen. Don't sell weapons to them. Use genuine international aid organizations to help the poor needy African people. Don't believe parasites such as Meles Zenawi!!!!!!!!! Look !! he is in power for almost 20 years. Should we worship this cult???????!!!!! In USA & Britain presidents/prime ministers have been changed at least 3 times!! Still this parasite aspires to stay in power indefinitely. It is shame for you westerners to help such hyenas for the simple reason that he is your servant. Please, be long sighted and stand on the side of the people.

Guna should investigate teh case!
This is a splendid idea (for the record)! UK will pay the money and one of the mushrooming Tigre- TPLF affiliates such as Guna, will investigate the case. Then the whole affair is transparent for all of us (the victims, the traitor and the funder).
