Largest Ethiopian newspaper sued by Orthodox Church

Largest Ethiopian newspaper sued by Orthodox Church

The Ethiopian private newspaper Addis Neger is being sued by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, according to local newspaper reports this weekend. It was charged of defaming the church by allegedly writing false information about Patriarch Abune Paulos and the ongoing crisis inside the troubled church.

The famous Amharic weekly paper widely reported on the power struggle inside the church's executive committee. Journalist Abraham Begizew was as the result taken to a police station before being released on bail. Abraham was previously attacked and beaten by unidentified men as he was investigating the crisis in the Addis Ababa Diacese.

According to local papers, the Addis Neger Editor-in-Chief Tamerate Nagera was also jailed briefly.

The previous Editor of the newspaper faced similar issues last year as he was imprisoned briefly over the paper's coverage of the controversial trial of singer Teddy Afro. Addis Neger is said to have the largest newspaper circulation in the country.

A HABIT IS LIKE A REPUTATION EASY TO AQUIRE HARD TO GET RID OF
Referemce is made to the jailing, for two years, of a BAHATAWI circ 1998 for speaking out about the atrocities by the head of the EOTC. I still have a copy of the letter a US Congressman wrote that facilitated in the realeas of the Bahatawi.

currupt
It is not surprising thing at all. Ethiopian orthodox church has been currupt and baised institutions agains many ethiopian citizen and religious ethnics and including muslims, waqaafana, pendes, etc.

First, no religion should no be in the business of politics. The orthodox church in Ethiopia is anomaly case.It has been instrusmental in subverting the country's rulers and power structure by instigating coup de'etat against some while supporting others like Haile vs. Lijj Eyu incident. So, it is not surprising if Ato Melez uses and manipulates once again. And why not when others trying to do the same thing?

Urgent Need
This is a very timely question.Deserting or doing the right thing? It is either we stand for what is right and take action or look the other way while many lives sink into more severe danger. For example let us take how many lives with HIV/AIDS were being assisted by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church..The Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) has a vast network .

A .This particular money that is missing was supposed to be used for Ethiopian Orthodox Church involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention, care .Please call or write (EOC) at the following and make your concern heard…

Phone: 251 1 55 35 66 or 11 96 61 , Fax: 251 1 55 14 55,

E-mail: eoc.dicac@telecom.net .May we prevail!!
