Weekly Poll: Which political group is best for Oromo people of Ethiopia?
Over the years, several political organizations have been created to promote the interest of Oromo people separately and in some cases the interest of Oromo people in an Ethiopian umbrella. Members of famous opposition groups like OFDM, OPC and OLF are known to have their beginnings and influences from the Mecha and Tulama Association (MTA).
Meanwhile, the Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO) functions as part of the EPRDF ruling party of Meles Zenawi. The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) has been engaged in a low-level armed struggle against Ethiopian governments for decades and it is currently led by Dawud Ibsa. OPDO's leading figures are Minister of Finance Sufian Ahmed and Minister of Trade Girma Birru.
The Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement (OFDM) legal opposition party in Ethiopia has been led by Bulcha Demeksa and Dr Moga Frissa while another opposition group, the Oromo Peoples Congress (OPC), is led by Dr. Merera Gudina. Another young and large opposition party led by Judge Birtukan Mideksa, Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ), brings a diverse political agenda and option for Oromos. All five political organizations and their programs are well-known.
