Ethiopia: Arsi Oromo students imprisoned for protesting Govt holiday

Jimma Times

Mostly Oromo and other Ethiopian students protesting against a government holiday reportedly have remained in prison for days. According to JT sources, the Oromo students in several schools in Arsi province of Ethiopia's Oromia state were detained for demonstrating against the Ginbot 20 holiday, saying the holiday is only for the Tigrayan Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) of the EPRDF coalition ruling party and it does not concern Oromo people. The word "Ginbot" translates to the month of "May" in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia.

The center of the protest was in Ardaita Agricultural, Technical and Vocational training Education College (ATVET) of Oromia where the students protested by wearing black clothes of mourning and walking barefoot around the campus to show their opposition to the Meles government that replaced the Mengistu government on the date of May (Ginbot) 20 EC, 1991. Atleast a dozen of the students are said to be taken to the local police station since then.

Hundreds of students who were not involved with the demonstration took shelter inside the local Orthodox church, fearing they will be caught in the middle between the protesting students and the police. The school still remains closed since the tension began and college officials are holding meetings to find solutions.

The demonstration was carried out peacefully. But regional authorities often fear that politically active Oromo students would be influenced by groups like Oromo Fedealist Democratic Movement (OFDM), Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and Oromo Peoples Congress (OPC), which have been opposing the Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO) group of the ruling party.

This year has witnessed a big rise in the number of peaceful demonstrations held inside or near college campuses around the country, with most demonstrating in favor of diverse reasons, ranging from religious, human rights and educational to political causes.

Re: Unity rather then complaing

Fist and most, Oromoo Nation was defeated and colonized after the Nation of Oromo ascended to a great height as powerful and respected nation through
exercising the original Gadaa governing system . The interactions (be civil
or militarily) and influences of it's neighbors brought the social division that changed the course of history for the Oromoo Nation. The Oromoo Nation's self rule under the original and home-grown democratic system of
Gadaa was targeted by the neighbors of the Oromo Nation and ridiculed for not been modern, as opposed to their own feudal system. As a result,
individualism and opportunism started to emerge in the Orom society. This adopted self centeredness (alien to the Gadaa principles) began to erode the
practiced communal centered local administrations of Oromo vicinities as the local Oromo leaders begun to enjoy the newly acquired exploitative status which enabled them to divided and establish local chiefs in various regions of Oromia in the late 16th-century. The division with in the communities of Oromo gave it's neighbors the opportunity and the dreams to
justify their advances to acquire the belongings of the Oromo Nation as a whole. But the Abyssinian rulers have to create the justifying motto, or
trade mark for their advancing armies. Whether spreading Christianity,
unifying subjects of their kingdom, bringing modernization or Democracy(?) to the area, they were able to penetrate, divide and conquer the lands and
people of Oromia. This was/is the beginning and continuation of the Oromo Nation's colonization.

It is a public secret to know that all the previous Colonial rulers of Ethiopia utilized the same frame of mind even up to the present day, with little varied tactics and periodically altered (on the surface) strategies to keep this Colonial state as one as much as they could by justifying their
barbaric actions against the indigenous people. Haile Silase divided the people of Oromia into Ten provinces, in some areas; attaching or mixing them
with other colonized Nations and Nationalities. Administratively,
modernization was used to continue the dreams of his ancestors, including
Menilik's. He systematically suppressed the language, and all the social fabrics of the Oromo Nation. Haile Silase made no secret of glamorizing his own people's (Amhara) Language, History and culture on the expenses of Oromo and all conquered nation and nationalities of Ethiopia who were openly made the joking stock when they even spoke in their own language in public.
All the social structures were encouraged by the state to adhere to the Amhara (Linguistic, Culture, and Historical) standard as it was declared to be the state of Ethiopia's official Social institutions.

Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam who claimed to follow the "Scientific Socialism" after overthrowing the Feudo-Monarch regime of Haile Silase used
even more open slogan of
"Ethiopian Unity or death", to keep resuscitating the disintegrating colonial structure of the country. But at near the end of his regime,
Colonel Mengistu almost indirectly furnished the opportunity for a persuasive victory preparation for the Eritrean national movements. His
pseudo slogan proved not strong enough to stand the Eritrean people determination to achieve their victory and end the Ethiopian colonialism. So
may divertive tactics were attempted by the Ethiopian colonial rulers to no
match with the Eritrean people quest for their freedom. With the emergence of the guerrilla fighters of the TPLF from the forest to the power in
Ethiopia, Eritrea declared their total independence from years of the Ethiopian colonial rules.

The current Ethiopian regime known as TPLF found democratization to have a
useful currency as a code word for its agenda of domination and
resuscitating the remaining parts of Ethiopia once again from collapsing as all the other old prisons of Nations/Nationalities who were put together by the mouth of fires and guns. Contrary to the previous Ethiopian regimes TPLF
started with taking the right steps: The TPLF regime, by agreeing (in principle) to implement the July 1991 Charter, recognized the fact that
"nations, nationalities, and peoples" in Ethiopia have the right to self-determination including independence (July Charter, Art. 2). The
prelude of the agreement mentioned "the end of an era of subjugation and
oppression". But, soon TPLF revealed it's true color by harassing and imprisoning those who drafted the parable itself. Once again, time proved
that it was actually the beginning of conquest and tyranny under ethnic
Tigrean control. The TPLF, operating under the cover of surrogate parties,
quickly consolidated its exclusive control over the transitional government
at all levels, and presented itself as the sole political power of the country. Any opposition party advocating for other Nations and Nationalities in the country whether formed legally as prescribed in their
constitution, or illegally greeted with the same predicaments: tortures,
disappearances, indefinite detention without any due process … and the list goes on.

What part the we played in retarding our struggles, and in remaining under Abyssinian colonization: Just like in any other colonized nations' history, the Oromo opportunists
had done their disgusting treachery, and continue to play a huge role in helping the minority Abyssinians to remain in position of dominating the
Oromo Nation starting from Gobena Daccee of central Oromia to Abba Biyyaa Abbaa Joobir of Western Oromia. I choose not to repeat the details of their
daily dirty tricks designed by their masters, and executed by these home born parasites of the people of Oromia, but suffice to study how the diversity and abundances of Oromia is being utilized by all (the internal &
external) enemies of the Oromo people. It is vivid now a days localism is at it's highest level in dividing the Oromo nationals within the Oromo
national struggle. This did not happen by chance. It had been under a well designed anti Oromo schemes for Oromo Nationals fragmentation. It started
taking shape when localism was injected into Oromo national politics. It has a direct effect in dividing the Oromo people and their nationalists.
Even if this method is old, it still works for the colonialists and their agents to weaken the struggle by turning this huge Nation against each other. The bottom line remains some individuals in our people
remain a poison for the growth and development of Orommummaa, such colonially designed OPDO...and the list goes on. Regionalism or localism are all the same destructive agenda in Oromo politics. Calling or
segregating each other on the basis of region, religion, gender, or age is feeding into our enemies trap, and should be rejected by all the true sons
and daughters of Oromia.

It is at this juncture that I will resort back to the scientifically validated example of human brain chemistry that (I believe to be) an outstanding example on how working in harmony with each other will make you not only a better person, but will give the message to the whole World that Oromo Nation is an effective, respected, capable of enforcing what this Nation believes to be
serving it's best interest. Here let me go back to Cerebrum and break it down more in details: The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres. Each hemisphere is responsible for the opposite half of our body. The left side of the brain controls movements and receives information from the right side of the brain. The right side of the brain controls the left side movements and receives information from the left side of the brain. Each hemisphere is divided into four lobes. Each lobe is responsible for different functions. The frontal lobes are the largest of the four lobes. The frontal lobes are connected to the limbic system. The frontal lobes decide whether an event is
threatening or dangerous. Other functions include speech, planning, decision making, and purposeful behavior. If these lobes are damaged, we will not be able to express ourselves; be able to carry out the correct order of an activity such as dressing; be unable to plan, carry out, or understand a
complex action or idea (such as cultivating in our Coffee plantation field or putting together tax money needed to keep off the colonial
administrations ); or adapt to any new situations. In the parietal lobes we put our world together. Our qubee/letters become words and words become thoughts. We are able to perceive (judge and understand) things in our environment. We can judge distance and depth from an object and the movement of something toward us; this is called spatial perception. For example, we need to put on clothes, eat, walk down the
street, and play soccer ball. These lobes allow us to connect a speaker to a voice and to make sense of what our skin feels. The temporal lobes let us
understand what we hear, what we smell, and how to write and draw. The occipital lobes are just for vision. The eyes send visual information to the these lobes so we can recognize and make sense of what we see. Without this ability, we would not be able to react in the right was. We may see things that are not really there or have hallucinations. In short, we would not be aware of what is real. If these lobes are damaged, we can become
blind even if there is no damage to our eyes or other parts of our visual system.

This is a true life experience which we all do every day in and out. Even if I touched a very minimum fragment of human brain chemistry, you can imagine how much huge and complex actually it is. But despite the size and
complexity, it can function in harmony earning the competency status and beyond. You and me are the best testimony to that. We continue to pursue our daily
goals, agendas, or our daily responsibilities, because each of our complex brain part does it's job. It is true that we all live and experience events
differently. Some of us live a simple life, some live a complex and high life, yet majority of us live just a normal life. But if any part/hemisphere or lobe, (it does not matter how small or big it could be), failed to function as expected, that person will be classified as an
incompetent, crazy person or worse.

What abut our Nation, we said it is huge and complex. Then do you think it is possible for Oromo people to work together in harmony, and overcome the
obstacles that are created by our enemies? What about me and you! When are we going to know that: provide all parts of Oromia does have it's expected responsibilities, and each and every citizens of Oromia are to come first despite their birth places, religion, and regions!!! When are we going to celebrate the beauty of our enormous diversity? When are we going to
respect our elders as dictated by our cultural heritage, Gadaa regardless of their birthplace? When are we going to be the Oromos not withstanding
attempts from our enemies (within or out) to divide each and every one of us. Make no mistake, this War Front was opened and articulated by the
classic enemies of our nation, a long time ago during the formation of OLF. At first none of those Abyssinian political architect were sure that
this Organization will come true. But as soon as OLF started to appear practically in every corner of Oromo, they realized what severe mistake they made by underestimating the Oromos, and decided to halt it's progress with any means necessary. Because the existence of OLF is a matter of life and death for them in their minds. This is why some times ago they claimed that OLF is over, and does not exist. But after two days resumed accusing and convicting OLF for every sabotage perpetuated in Ethiopia. Remember this is
the same OLF they claimed to be not in existence a few hours ago!!!! Swallowed by such huge fear, they proceeded to plant division through their
agents in the OLF according to Region, and Religion, which breaded mistrust, hate, and paralyzed the organization. Even if it is not the intention of
this message to finger point at any Oromo individual or group except OPDO, it is suffice
to say that the present heightened Localism and Regionalism in OLF is the
direct result of this.

Is this division a temporary or a permanent successes for the enemies of our Nation? You will be the judge. It is not over yet. OLF is bigger than that, I can definitely and absolutely promise you that.

What does OPDO stands for?
Neither a Democracy could be given to a society as manna from the sky by a heavenly or an earthly kingdom or by a benevolent self-appointed dictator, nor by bunches of robbers succeeded to snatch the power by the means of gun. It is an internal process to a society; it grows, develops, and flourishes through history within the culture of a society. On the contrary, a mimic of democratization based on foreign models to be enforced on a society amounts to failure; it does not work. Suffice to say, democracy cannot be imported or exported or it cannot be imposed by external force upon a society. If one seeks it from outside to be imposed on a society by the help of external powers that democracy will perish. History has proven, time and time again, this to be true both in Africa, Asia and Latin America. By and large, the struggle for democracy is within the existing sovereign nation-state, not empire. History teaches that Empires are born by wars, growth and rise by wars, and maintained by force, by terror and repression. Nothing makes the empire of Abyssinia different. As they born by wars, so they die by wars; as they grow, so they stagnate; as they rise, so they decline and as they stand tall and so they finally fall. That is for sure, these are the laws, the rules, and fates that governed all empires so far known to man. Hence Empires have never known to stand tall for all times. It is not as some turncoat (gantuu)OPDO elements want us believe that "the failure of the empires to be democratized is because the system excludes the participation of the majority." On the contrary, empires failed to be democratized, because of their innate formation, their character and their nature. Empires are not meant to be democratized but to be dismantled and dissolved. Hence, Ethiopia is an empire and it cannot be democratized. To this effect, the Oromo's struggle is not for the democratization of Ethiopia, as some Oromo turncoats wish us to believe. In another word, the struggle for the right to self-determination is not conditional on the absence of democracy, or on the grievances of injustice as a result of national oppression, subjugation, and exploitation, though they contribute to the struggle, but it is a struggle of the people for polity, for politically independent separate sovereign state. It is, therefore, neither a struggle for fair and free elections, nor a struggle for freedom of speech, nor a struggle for equality, nor for freedom of assembly, or association in an empire, as Oromo capitulationist elements of OPDO want us to believe. Here we must be reminding ourselves, the struggle for self-determination is not the same as the struggle for a mere democracy alone. In the case of colonized people, the struggle for self-determination is part and parcel of the struggle for independence as well as for reclaiming their lost democracy- their system of government, the rule of people.

Overall, We should not borrow the meaning or the connotation that OPDO and its likes attached to emancipation/liberation of the Oromoo people. That is, we should refrain from interpreting the meaning of liberation following in the footsteps of the Oromo local pro-colonialist loyalist forces, as represented by OPDO and its alliances. Let the opponents of Oromo national struggle say whatever they want to say about liberation. Our job is to expose that misleading meaning and interpretation attached to it. And also it is our responsibility to give a correct meaning, interpretation and concept of it.

However, it is unwise and wrong on the part of nationalists to run away from the true and original meaning or concept of liberation, in the hope to create and re-write another meaning for it, simply because OPDO and its alliance distorted its interpretation. Hence one should not fall prey to the meaning, the OPDO and its alliance attached to it. It is equally wrong to spine, to massage, to turn and twist so as to distort the original meaning of liberation and give it another interpretation simply to be different from the meaning given to it by the opponents of Oromo independence. To do so is to confuse the public. And it is our responsibility not to confuse the public. It is wise to stick to its original meaning and concepts as all nationalists used it in their struggles throughout history. As we have seen OPDO, its supporters, and its masters have been intentionally trying to distort its meaning so as to fit their political line. Nationalists should continue with a relentless effort to expose this.
Oromia shall be free.

Unity rather then complaing
I read most of your thought and wishes fro mother Oromia; as long as those three oromos keep dividing our people we don't need freedom unless all Oromo are free in each corner of Oromia not onlt H, W, or A

who cares??
The imprisonment of Oromos who disliked 'ginbot 20' is againts the right of the Oromo. They should be freed. If they think that the day deserves wearing black clothes of mourning, that’s their right. They have the right to mourn for Derg and Mengistu H/mariam. But as of Tegaru (tigrians) We don't care whether 'ginbot 20' was celebrated or not. We, Tigrians had been free years ahead of Ginbot 20 of 1983. Years before that day, we kicked the ass of Derg and were living free of any of its influence. The day, ginbot 20, was meant other nations including Oromo who were definilty, may not be 100% convincingly, the benefiter of the day. We in Tigray cares about Lekatit 11th, not Ginbot 20.

Hi guys,
I really liked your metaphor! Gadaa people being lead by the spirit of Bilisummaa or mindset of OLF is moving in tandem to its Kaayyoo! Interestingly people in OLF-I are keeping the status quo (life in Diredhawa) by talking as if they moved Oromos to the END. Those in OLF-II are pushing for Autonomous Oromia in Ethiopian Union (move to Adaama), whereas OLF-III wants to move further and achieve the true END aka Sovereign state of Oromia in a future United State of Africa (arrive Finfinne). This tandem arrangement of liberation movement helps Oromo organizations not to antagonize each other. Why should OLF-III oppose those keeping the status quo and those wanting to move to Adama? Why should OLF-II oppose those keeping status quo and those who planned to move to the true END (Finfinne)? Why should OLF-I oppose those who want to move to only Adaama and those who want to move up to Finfinne? This is a big MERDO for our foes who want to sow a discord among such strategically positioned Oromo liberation groups! Thanks really for the metaphor!!
