Oromia - Ethiopia: ETMF honors Jimma University students

Ethiopia Tadesse Memorial Fund (ETMF) performed its annual awards ceremony for excelling Jimma University (JU) students as the university began closing regular classes for the year 2000 [Ethiopian Calendar – E.C.]

The ETMF famliy foundation, which also supports the NGO NLTCDP in Ethiopia, gives the ETMA prize yearly to outstanding students in a chosen department of JU. The preliminary qualification requirement is an A– GPA, before university department Professors then select the finalists based on the students’ display of hard work, community service, commitment and innovation.

ETMF was established by interested members of Mr. Bulcha Debosie’s family to remember the late mother and wife Mrs. Ethiopia Tadesse, who died at the age of 60 five years ago.  In her memory, family members inside and outside Ethiopia set up the ETMF philanthropic foundation to support various organizations who contribute to the betterment of the community and country. Several distinguished personal of the university joined Mr. Bulcha during the awards presentation, including different university department professors, VP Dr. Abebaw Gashaw, Ext. officer Melkamu Dumessa and FoT Dean Tamene Adugna.

Along with a certificate of recognition, ETMA gives the finalist students advanced textbooks for further study, Cash prizes and ETMA Pro-Net membership which creates a network between graduating students and Ethiopian professionals of matching career fields as well as gives further learning opportunities by connecting with other institutions inside and outside the country.

ETMF also sponsors and finances Jimma Times (JT) International media in Ethiopia while it recently financed the establishment of JT’s branch Yeroo newspaper, the first private and independent newspaper published in Qubee Afaan Oromo inside Ethiopia, primarily circulating in parts of the Oromia regional state. ETMF’s Yeroo newspaper staff is surrounded by distinguished journalists and former VOA and BBC employees, including former VOA Afaan Oromo & Amharic journalist Nouamin Bikila.

According to the award selection board from Jimma University, honoring the previous ETMA winners like Mr. Taha Jibril from the Faculty of Technology, who displayed an exceptional hard working character, encouraged other university students to do the same and boosted competition in the department.
